Private wealth

Private banks, ultra-high-net-worth advisors and the firms competing for the wealthiest clients.

Private wealth is the top end of wealth management: high- and ultra-high-net-worth families served by private banks, the private wealth units of the large investment banks, trust companies, multi-family offices and the biggest independent advisory firms.

Clients at this level usually need more than portfolio management. Firms compete on lending against portfolios and property, access to private markets, trust and estate work, tax coordination across entities and generations, and reporting that pulls it all together.

Financial ADVSR covers the private wealth business: the advisors and teams moving between private banks and independent firms, the deals, and the products being built for the wealthiest clients.

Questions

What is private wealth management?

Wealth management for high- and ultra-high-net-worth clients, typically combining investment management with lending, private-market investments, trust and estate services and coordination of tax and family affairs.

What is the difference between private wealth and wealth management?

Private wealth is the high end of wealth management. The services overlap, but private wealth firms serve fewer, wealthier clients, often with high minimums, and add banking, lending and family-office style services.

Who provides private wealth management?

Private banks, the private wealth units of large investment banks and wirehouses, trust companies, multi-family offices and large independent registered investment advisers.

What is a family office?

An organization that manages a wealthy family’s investments and wider financial affairs. A single-family office serves one family; a multi-family office serves several and usually registers as an investment adviser.
