Questions
How is a recruiting deal paid?
Most of the upfront money is a forgivable loan under a promissory note: the firm forgives a slice each year you stay, typically over 7 to 12 years as reported, and any unforgiven balance generally comes due if you leave early. Backend bonuses are paid only if you hit asset or growth targets.
Is a forgivable loan taxed?
Each forgiven slice is generally taxed as ordinary income in the year it is forgiven, not when the loan is made. This calculator applies the tax rate you enter to each year’s forgiveness; it is not tax advice.
How big are wirehouse recruiting deals?
Financial Planning reported in May 2026 that wirehouse offers range from 300% to 400% of trailing-12-month revenue, versus about 125% on average at independent broker-dealers.
Where the numbers come from
Defaults marked with a source come from our sourced guides; the rest are plain examples to replace with your own. Results are arithmetic on what you enter, calculated in your browser. To see them we ask for your name and email, which we keep with the numbers you entered and never sell (privacy). This is an estimate for planning conversations, not investment, legal or tax advice.
