The Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living increase for 2027 on October 14, 2026, the largest since 2023, while advocates say retirees still face a purchasing power gap.

InvestmentNews reported that the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027 is 3.6%, the largest since 2023, and that fuel-driven inflation drove the larger increase. The Social Security Administration announced the figure on October 14, 2026.

A statement from Commissioner Frank Bisignano says the adjustment covers 76 million Americans. CNBC put the number of affected Social Security recipients at about 72 million, plus roughly 7.3 million SSI beneficiaries. CNN estimated that the average retiree's benefit would climb roughly $75 a month, reaching about $2,170 starting in January.

The adjustment is tied to the CPI-W index. ABC News noted that the calculation draws on CPI-W readings from July, August and September. 401k Specialist reported that the CPI-W rose 3.9% in September compared with a year earlier. Fox Business attributed part of the larger adjustment to energy price increases tied to the Iran conflict and to disruptions in oil and gasoline supply.

The 3.6% adjustment is the largest since 2023, when beneficiaries received 8.7%, and it follows a 2.8% adjustment in 2026, according to CNBC. Advisors working with specific clients should confirm exact amounts against the SSA's own materials before relying on any single figure.

401k Specialist reported that 76% of older Americans say the 2027 raise will not keep pace with inflation, and that advocates are pressing Congress to change the COLA formula. Financial Planning reported that inflation is likely to keep eroding the adjustment and that advisors are sharing approaches for discussing the purchasing power gap with clients.

Federal retirees will not all see the same adjustment. Federal News Network reported that FERS retirees will receive 2.6%, while CSRS retirees will receive the full 3.6%.

CNN reported that the higher average retirement benefit begins in January. The adjustment is set by the existing formula, and the advocacy groups quoted in the coverage are asking Congress to revisit that formula. Coverage so far focuses on how far the increase will reach against household costs.

Key facts:
- The SSA announced a 3.6% benefit increase for 2027 on October 14, 2026.
- About 72 million Social Security recipients are affected, according to CNBC.
- CNN reported that the average retirement benefit rises by about $75 per month, to an estimated $2,170.

Why it matters: For advisors with retired clients, the change is a near-term cash flow shift in monthly benefits, and the purchasing power gap described in the coverage bears on withdrawal rates and spending assumptions. Clients receiving federal retirement benefits should be reviewed individually, since FERS and CSRS retirees receive different adjustments. Household budget assumptions should allow for the possibility that a 3.6% increase will not offset every cost.
