Edward Jones added a net 140 advisors and saw its branch count fall by 179 in the third quarter, as the firm shifts away from one-advisor offices.

AdvisorHub reported on Nov. 6 that St. Louis-based Edward Jones grew its advisor count while reducing its number of branches during the third quarter. According to that outlet, the firm continues to step away from its traditional single-advisor branch format.

According to AdvisorHub, the number of advisors increased 1% from a year earlier, reaching 20,654 on Sept. 25, and the company brought on a net 140 during the quarter. Physical branches fell by 179 in the quarter to 14,492, a 3.5% decline from 15,022 a year earlier. The advisor figure is cited through trade coverage of the firm's quarterly SEC filing rather than from the filing's tables themselves.

In its own third-quarter update, a paid press release dated Nov. 6, the firm characterizes its recent activity as sustained expansion and spending aimed at future growth. Per the release, roughly 6.3 million households and $2.7 trillion in assets under care were on the books on Sept. 25, and more than 9 million clients are served through over 20,000 advisors. The $2.7 trillion is an assets-under-care measure, not a price or revenue figure.

Financial Planning reported that net asset inflows rose 12% year over year to $19 billion in the third quarter, and that total revenue climbed 13% to $5.2 billion, driven mainly by fee revenue. That outlet linked the advisor growth to a recovery from attrition last year and noted that more than 200 advisors were added in the second quarter. The outlet also said advisors are now permitted to operate as teams instead of only from individual branch locations, which marks a shift from the firm's long-held approach.

The firm's 10-Q for the quarter ended Sept. 25 reports third-quarter financial advisor compensation and benefits of $1,991 million, up 13% year over year. The same filing lists variable compensation of $835 million, up 6%, and communications and data processing expense of $367 million, up 22%. These are dollar expense lines, not measures of assets.

Edward Jones was founded in 1922 by Edward D. Jones Sr. in downtown St. Louis, according to an InvestmentNews company profile, and its first branch office opened in Mexico, Missouri, in 1957. The firm is owned by its employees and retired employees rather than being publicly traded. Its ultimate parent, The Jones Financial Companies, L.L.L.P., is a Missouri limited liability limited partnership that is not governed by a board of directors. InvestmentNews puts the firm's employee count at about 55,000, and Umbrex lists Penny Pennington as managing partner since 2019.

Outside figures vary. US News lists 24,100 advisors, a number that may include non-advisor staff, and it cites $1.0 trillion in assets, while Wikipedia cites about $2.2 trillion. The firm's $2.7 trillion assets-under-care figure is its most recent and is the one used in this article.

AdvisorHub reported earlier this year, in January, that Edward Jones expanded eligibility for its profits-interest award, based on an SEC filing. That earlier coverage also reported attrition of 6.1% in the third quarter of 2025, up from 4.7% a year earlier.

Regulatory filings show Edward Jones Bank received conditional approval from the FDIC and the Utah Department of Financial Institutions in February 2026, and the firm expects to open the bank by early 2027. The firm has also said a retirement plan management tool built with Aboon and RPAG will roll out to advisors in 2027.

Key facts:
- Advisor headcount of 20,654 as of Sept. 25, up 1% year over year (AdvisorHub)
- Physical branches fell by 179 in the quarter to 14,492 (AdvisorHub)
- About 6.3 million client households and $2.7 trillion in client assets under care as of Sept. 25 (firm's Q3 update)
- Net asset inflows of $19 billion in Q3, up 12% year over year (Financial Planning)
- Total revenue of $5.2 billion in Q3, up 13% year over year, driven mainly by fee revenue (Financial Planning)

Why it matters: A shrinking branch count alongside rising advisor headcount signals to recruiters and advisors weighing where to work that the traditional office model is giving way to team-based arrangements. Those arrangements change how advisors share client service, support staff and office space. For firm leaders, the combination shows how large networks can reshape physical footprints while still pursuing advisor growth.
