Captrust has added the Winston-Salem-based Hoge-Barrett Group, a 13-person team formerly at Truist, which the firm says serves more than $3 billion in client assets.

WealthManagement.com reported on October 14, 2026 that Captrust has added the Hoge-Barrett Group, a 13-person wealth team based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and led by Brett Hoge. Captrust confirmed the addition the same day in its own release, distributed through PR Newswire. Citywire RIA also reported the deal.

The asset figure needs a careful reading. Captrust's announcement says the team serves more than $3 billion in client assets, and WealthManagement.com says the team manages more than $3 billion. Those are client assets, not Captrust's own assets under management, and the firm's release draws that line itself. According to the announcement, the group's roots date to 1999.

The deal also adds to Captrust's North Carolina footprint. The firm says Winston-Salem will be its seventh location in the state, where it reports more than 580 employees, including 111 advisors. Citywire RIA put the state headcount at roughly 580 within a national workforce of more than 2,000. Captrust's website describes more than 1,800 employees nationally, and Wikipedia lists about 1,960 for 2025, so national headcount varies by source.

In the release, Hoge gave several reasons the team chose Captrust, pointing to greater room to operate, a more capable technology infrastructure, stronger investment research and a broader set of planning services. Scott Matheson, managing director and head of client solutions at Captrust, said the firm sees elite advisory teams increasingly moving toward independent RIAs in search of more control, while keeping the resources of a larger organization. The release presents the move as part of that wider shift.

WealthManagement.com reported that the team had operated within the Truist Investment Services unit of Truist Financial Corporation. Fa-mag characterizes the move as a hire drawn from that Truist unit. No statement from Truist was located. No Form ADV, BrokerCheck record or other regulatory filing for the Hoge-Barrett Group was found in the reporting reviewed for this article.

Captrust is headquartered in Raleigh and was founded in 1997, according to Wikipedia and a Captrust release. The firm is majority employee-owned. Its release says CEO and founder Fielding Miller remains the largest individual shareholder, and that more than half of employees take part in equity programs. Minority investments come from the Carlyle Group and GTCR, and the Captrust client brochure says GTCR holds more than 25% of the firm indirectly through Halftime Holdings, LLC. WealthManagement.com reported that Captrust has surpassed $1 trillion in total client assets, including $220 billion in assets under management with the remainder under advisement.

Captrust's asset totals differ across sources. Fa-mag reported that the firm's press materials cite more than $1.3 trillion in AUM and advisement, while WealthManagement.com cites roughly $320 billion in discretionary AUM from the firm's most recent Form ADV. Those measures are not interchangeable, and readers should compare them only on a like-for-like basis.

Captrust's recent activity includes a September 2026 transaction in which it acquired two longstanding affiliated advisory firms in Melville, New York. WealthManagement.com put their combined size at seven professionals and $1.2 billion in client assets. The sources do not report the terms of the Hoge-Barrett transaction, the timeline for transitioning clients, or whether other team members will follow. The firm's announcement is the primary source for the team's roots, staffing and asset figures, and independent confirmation of the $3 billion figure was not located.

Key facts:
- Hoge-Barrett Group: 13 employees, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., and led by Brett Hoge, per WealthManagement.com and Captrust's announcement
- More than $3 billion in client assets, per Captrust's announcement; WealthManagement.com says the team manages more than $3 billion
- Winston-Salem is Captrust's seventh North Carolina location, where the firm reports more than 580 employees, including 111 advisors
- The group's roots date to 1999, according to Captrust's announcement
- In September 2026 Captrust acquired two affiliated advisory firms in Melville, N.Y., with seven professionals and $1.2 billion in client assets, per WealthManagement.com

Why it matters: For advisors weighing a move, the announcement sets out the factors this team cited: operating flexibility, technology, investment research and planning support. Recruiters and firm leaders should note that the headline figure measures client assets, which can differ from the assets-under-management figures firms report in regulatory filings, so comparisons need a consistent measure. Deal terms and the team's asset figure have not been independently confirmed in the sources reviewed, so they should be verified before use in competitive analysis.
